(Source: WDSU-TV NBC) NEW ORLEANS —Dangerous and unsafe living conditions for the elderly and disabled in New Orleans are coming to light in a lengthy report at Satchmo Plaza in Central City.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development issued multiple violations for an apartment complex for the elderly and disabled.
The complex has dozens of units and is operated by the Central City Housing Corp.
They said one of the people on the board is Orleans Parish Judge Harry Cantrell.
"This scares me,” Joann Sparks said about her 87-year-old grandmother's home. "This door is literally rotten.”
Her mother, Juanita Celestine, said she just had to move from an upstairs apartment to the first floor due to the stairs being in poor condition.
"You can break your damn neck down there,” Celestine said.
The report states that Satchmo Plaza has not been properly maintained.
As a result, it has subjected elderly and disabled tenants to health and safety risks.
The report also states the complex could not provide HUD reasonable assurance that it properly managed its project and funds, putting at least $314,000 at risk for mismanagement, according to the report...
