Over lunch at the Sendera, the Victoria Housing Authority Board accepted the resignation of Executive Director Debbie Gillespie.

Gillespie's resignation comes about a month after an inspector general found the housing authority mismanaged more than $780,000 between Jan. 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.

It also comes as law enforcement investigates Gillespie, former Chief Financial Officer Dolores Garza and other employees for theft.

Gillespie was not present at the meeting, which lasted about an hour.

The board spent half of that time in closed session.

Gillespie indicated in an Oct. 1 letter that she had "reluctantly" decided to resign because she thought her only other option was to face termination.

"I want this letter to reflect, however, that I do not feel that it was fair that I was given these options, as I have not stole(n) any monies, nor did I conspire with the former chief financial officer to accomplish what she did," Gillespie wrote. "I am in no form or fashion admitting any type of guilt, because I am not guilty of any wrongdoing."...
