Summary
HUD OIG is evaluating the Offices of Public and Indian Housing and Multifamily Housing Program’s policies for radon. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, and it is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Our objectives are to (1) describe and compare the Offices of Public and Indian Housing (PIH), Community Planning and Development (CPD), and Multifamily Housing (Multifamily)'s radon policies and their approaches to test and mitigate residents' exposure to elevated levels of radon; and (2) determine if HUD implemented certain requirements regarding radon to assist EPA in accordance with the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Amendments Act, also known as Public Law 100-628.
